The Fondazione Cariplo is a philanthropic foundation which carries out banking. Currently, the Foundation's board of directors is chaired by Giuseppe Guzzetti with Vice Mariella Enoc and Carlo Sangalli, the Secretary-General, Pier Mario Vello and advisers are Angelo Abbondio, Charles Cerami, Bruno Ermolli, Rocco Corigliano, Mark Luke Frey and Galli.

banking system prescribed by Law No 218 of 1990, the so-called Amato-Carli, requires that the lending activity is distinct from charity and the property of the control packets of many banks to pass the newly formed banking foundations. This process leads to the birth in December 1991 the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde, more commonly known as Cariplo. The foundation continues the charitable work of the Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde.

In 1997, the foundation structure has an intervention strategy that requires entities to present a project idea supported.

In January 1998 he completed the process of separation between the foundation Cariplo and the bank (Cariplo Spa). In the same year Cariplo Spa merges with Banco Ambrosiano, giving birth to Banca Intesa. On 31 December 2000, the name Cariplo ceases to be used by the bank. Later Banca Intesa promotes various combinations with the Cassa di Risparmio di Parma e Piacenza, Banca Popolare FriulAdria, with the Italian Commercial Bank and Sanpaolo IMI in 2007, creating the Intesa Sanpaolo group. Cariplo Foundation receives income from financial operations and enrich its heritage.

The Cariplo Foundation in 1998 started a project in support of Community Foundations in the capitals of the provinces of Lombardy, in Verbania, Novara.

Activity

The Foundation carries out philanthropic activities in 4 main areas: environment, art and culture, research and personal services. The bottom lines of action plans are the growth of human capital and research development, enhancement and enjoyment of cultural heritage, the creation of maximum autonomy for the weak, the development is compatible with the environment.
