History

In the 1970s, the city leveled its downtown buildings and closed Leroy Street as part of an "urban renewal" plan.

 and nearby train depot. This caused many people to go without power, leaving the city in a state of emergency. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries.

In July 2011, the first proposed building, Cornerstone, to restore the city's old downtown area was announced.

, the city has a total area of 6.9 square miles (17.9 km²), of which 6.6 square miles (17.1 km²) is land and 0.3 square mile (0.776996433 km²), or 4.65%, is water. Most of the city is in Genesee County. The city has also annexed approximately 56 acre (0.22662416 km²) in Livingston County. Approximately 1.5 acre (0.00607029 km²) was formerly used as the city dump. The Tipsico Lake Project is a brownfield redevelopment project to restore the land and surrounding area. A small portion of the city also extends into Oakland County.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 33.7% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
