In 1873, aged 13, he traveled with his mother to Paris
, where he lived for six years, until 1879. Then he returned to Ecuador. On March 23, 1888 he married Leticia Andrade Chiriboga, with whom he had nineteen children, but eight of them died in their infancy. In 1889, he began his journalistic career
, writing articles in a liberal
newspaper
called La Linterna, but the ecclesiastical authorities of the city, censored and banned its publication. In 1896, he was appointed Rector of Colegio Nacional Benigno Malo, the main high school in Cuenca, and in 1903 he became mayor
of the city.
He bought in London

that arrived to the city of Cuenca in 1912, a car from the french company Clément-Bayard
. In 1913 he founded the first bank
in Cuenca, and he named it "Banco del Azuay". He also founded the Cuenca's Commerce Chamber in 1919. He served as Governor of Azuay Province from 1916 to 1920 and he died in his city, on February 14th, 1932, aged 72.
