Before the Municipality Reform, Fakse covered an area of 147 km², and had a total population of 12,243 (2005). Its mayor was René Tuekær Hansen, a former social democrat who has represented a local list since November, 1993, and continues to do so in Faxe municipality.

Fakse is home to Faxe Bryggeri, a relatively large brewery producing many kinds of beer and soft drinks. On the edge of town lies a big limestone
