The town was formed along with its county in 1789, and settlement of the region began the same year. Many of the early settlers were Quakers

There were 3,870 households out of which 40.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% were married couples
living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.
