, and the town of Selkirk, 7 miles (11.3 km) away.

It is next to the Ettrick Water and its name comes from the large bridge in the town spanning the large gap between the 2 cliffs at opposite sides of the river. There have been settlements in the village for over a century, but in recent years it has expanded rapidly with new houses being built every year.

It has a local pub called the Cross Keys Inn, a Village Hall, a Primary School and a Post Office

. However in October 2006 there was controversy as the Post Office was threatened with being shut down, it is the last Post Office remaining in Ettrickdale.

The village also has a well attended 5-a-side football tournament each year, contested by teams from throughout the Borders.
