He was elected to the New York State Assembly
in 1982 and represented the 59th and 60th Assembly Districts in Staten Island from 1983 until 2001, when he was elected to serve as a judge of the Civil Court
. In 2004 he became a State Supreme Court justice, and in 2005 he was recommended to the Eastern District bench by Senator Charles Schumer
. He was officially nominated to the court by President George W. Bush
on October 6, 2005, to a seat vacated by Arthur D. Spatt, confirmed by the United States Senate
on December 21, 2005, and received his commission on January 19, 2006.
