History

Emerson School of the Visual and Performing , named after Ralph Waldo Emerson

, was opened in September 1908. They were the first to teach the Work, Study, Play method, the first to have an indoor swimming pool and the first to have a petting zoo.

Emerson was closed in 1981 due to under population. It was reopened during the mid-80s as the first Visual and Performing Arts schools in Indiana.

Emerson is widely known for Academics and Majors, and it is considered to be one of the top High Schools in the State of Indiana.

Emerson is on the National Register of Historic Places.
