 backing. The art of making embroidered patches is decades old but the introduction of new high speed, computerized machines have brought a once rare, time consuming art into mass production.

Manufacture

Before the advent of computer technology, patches were made by hand. The process, however, remains the same today. First, a fabric backing is cut to shape. To prevent fraying, the edges of the backing are heat-sealed. Then, the thread is stitched into place. Some designs incorporate the backing as the background of the patch, while others completely cover the backing with stitches.
To finish the patch, iron-on adhesive is applied to the reverse. Obviously, in the early days, the final step was not done.

Usages

Fabric patches have been used with most uniforms. A common misconception is that astronauts/cosmonauts use them. Prior to 1967, this was true, but after the Apollo 1 fire, they were done without entirely because they were a fire hazard. Instead, the patches were silk screened onto a square of fireproof fabric, and then sewn on to the garment.
Souvenir patches are also commonly sold in gift shops the world over.

The way to use them is very simple,you can use them on your clothes or other material you like.

1) prepare the embroidery patches and the jeans(clothes,shoes or any other material) which will be ironed on.Prepare an iron.

2) Clean the part that will be ironed on.Put the patch on the right part.Put the side with heat seal backing directly on the pants,place a pressing cloth (such as a handkerchief, sheet or pillowcase fabric) over top.

3) Adjust the tempreture of the iron to the suiable degree.Iron the patch on force backward and forward for about 25seconds.

4) Allow the embroidery patches to cool down,check if it is fixed strongly.if not,try again as above same ways.
