The province has a population of 552,646 as of 2010. The population of the province was 569,616 in 2000 and 498,225 in 1990.
The total area of the province is 9153 square kilometres (3,534 sq mi), 826 km² (318.9 sq mi) of which is covered by reservoirs and natural lakes.
The current governor of the province is Muammer Erol (since 2006).
On March 8, 2010, the province suffered an earthquake
of magnitude 6.0, killing 42 people.
