(born May 3, 1941), nicknamed "Monk", served from 1987 to 2005 as the 16th president of the University of Notre Dame

in 1963 and 1967, and an M.A. in Theology
in 1969. He was ordained as priest
in 1970, and he received a PhD in Christian ethics
from Vanderbilt University
in 1975.
In 1974, he started teaching at Notre Dame. In 1986, he was elected by the trustees as Vice-President and Associate Provost. He served as President from 1987 to 2005.
