Dussen was a separate municipality until 1997, when it was merged with Werkendam. Before 1908, the name of the municipality was "Dussen, Munster en Muilkerk".

In 2001, the town of Dussen had 1,632 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.56 km², and contained 670 residences.
The statistical area "Dussen", which also includes the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 2,050.
