Newport Beach's Dory Fishing Fleet, has a long history and tradition. The Dory Fleet Market had its beginning in late 1891 when an enterprising fisherman tired of selling his fish to the wholesalers began marketing to the public on the beach.

These are the only commercial fishing boats that are lawfully permitted to cast off from the beach near Newport Pier, the numbers of these vessels and fishermen have dwindled from the early days when it was estimated that over 30 boats went out daily to catch fish that were sold in an open air market on the municipal beach in Newport Beach.

The market is open 7 days a week.(With the weather permitting). Each day the "Dory fishermen" launch their "dory boats" through the surf as early as 2 am. They return to shore around 7 to 9 am with the early morning's harvest. On weekends and holidays, customers will line up at the boats to purchase fish.
