He is a member of the Institute of Medicine
. His book, Princess and Peasants: Smallpox in History was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize
in 1983.
Dr. Hopkins was also elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences
in 1987 and has been a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene since 1965. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
in 1997, awarded the Medal of Honor
of Public Health (Gold) by the country of Niger in 2004, and named a Champion of Public Health by Tulane University
