. He was the son of David Lindsay, 11th Earl of Crawford
and Lilias Drummond, Baroness Fyvie. He married Jean Kerr, daughter of Mark Kerr, 1st Earl of Lothian
on 16 April 1610. They were subsequently divorced. He died in debtors prison in Edinburgh
in June 1620, being buried in Canongate
.
He was known by the nickname The Prodigal Earl. On 10 March 1608 he became a member of the Privy Council
of Scotland. He killed his cousin Sir Walter Lindsay of Balgavies, son of David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford
, and narrowly escaped being killed in turn by the murdered man's nephew
