Popular Kannada actor Darshan was arrested on Friday morning on charges of assaulting and threatening his wife with a revolver and has been booked for various offences, including attempt to murder, police said. Darshan went to the house of Vijayalakshmi's friend Vidya with whom she was staying to demand that his wife should return to his residence in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar in Bangalore.
Darshan's wife Vijayalakshmi is admitted to Bangalore's Gayatri hospital's Intensive Care Unit for injuries. The couple married in 2000 and have a son. Cases under different IPC sections including 307 (attempt to murder) and Arms Act have been registered against the actor, police said.
In her complaint, Vijayalakshmi alleged that the actor has been torturing her and their three-year-old child. Police said Vijayalakshmi along with her child had gone to her friend's house last evening after a fight with Darshan. The actor later went there and was returning home with his wife and child in his car when he allegedly assaulted her in an inebriated condition, police said. By this act Darshan is now populary known as Hero in Screen and Villain in Real Life..
Kannada actor Darshan denied bail, hospitalised
He is supposed to be in jail, but Kannada actor Darshan has been shifted to a hospital temporarily for asthma. And if Darshan thought he could walk without jail time, a trial court rejected his bail application. Which means Darshan will have to stay in jail at least till September 21.
The trial court's order rejecting bail came after glaring contradictions in Darshan's wife Vijayalakshmi's statement. While she had said in her police complaint that she had been assaulted and threatened with a gun, she later told the court that she suffered injures after a fall in the bathroom. Her medical report though shows both assault and cigarette burns.
Vijayalakshmi had, on Saturday, been admitted to a city hospital with multiple injuries. DCP West SN Sidramappa said, "There is evidence. The woman has given a complaint. The complaint says he has been harassing her for last few years - he's beaten her a month back too."
Even as fans watch on in horror, this real-life drama took another bizarre turn - with the Kannada Film Producers' Association banning actress Nikita for three years - effectively holding her responsible for Darshan's alleged assault on his wife.
Film producers' association President Munirathna Naidu said, "We don't want to know why he hit his wife - that's a personal matter. But this other heroine Nikita should've come, done her role and gone home. We're asking why is she involving herself in other matters."
That has got women's groups crying foul. And with producers allowing the hero himself go scot-free, the saga only gets murkier.
Treat your wife well or else no bail: High court to Darshan
Even after bail, there is no respite for Sandalwood star Darshan Tugudeep, as any error in his conduct towards his wife can land him in the soup once again. The high court on Thursday, while imposing bail conditions during in-camera proceedings, made it clear that he should look after his wife well and that the probe is not over yet.
Darshan, after being in judicial custody for over a month, was granted bail by the high court on October 7. Justice BV Pinto, while granting bail, had directed the actor, his wife, along with his counsel and public prosecutor, to be present in his chamber on October 13, in an effort to help the couple have a harmonious relationship.
The star and his wife Vijaylakshmi were led to the 20-minute in-camera proceedings in justice Pinto’s chambers. Reiterating the judge’s words, public prosecutor HS Chandramouli said that the judge has made it clear that the case against Darshan will go on as per the law but advised the actor to be a role model for youth and society at large through his good conduct, as he has a huge fan base. The judge also advised the couple to lead a harmonious life.
Justice Pinto imposed conditions for bail during the proceedings and said no relatives should interfere during the investigations.
They should not tamper with the witnesses or the evidence. Darshan should look after his wife well. If any of the conditions are violated, the state is at liberty to file for the cancellation of bail.
While Darshan came to the court with heavy security at 2pm, his wife Vijayalakshmi reached the court hours prior to Darshan’s arrival. Vijayalakshmi had a prolonged conversation with the public prosecutor in his office at the high court. She told him that she wants to forget the past and start life afresh.
