History

Danaos was founded in 1972 by Dimitri Coustas, an experienced shipping investor who had been active in the industry since 1963. Having developed sea transport services throughout its history, Danaos forged a reputation for operational support to liner companies and other charterers throughout the world.

In 1987, John Coustas took over as CEO of Danaos. As of March 12, 2007, the company's fleet comprises 39 container ships aggregating 138,931 twenty foot equivalent units. The company plans to increase this by an additional from 28 contracted vessels scheduled for delivery between 2007 and 2010.
