His debut EP, I'm Floatin' Mama was independently released in 1998; followed by his debut album, Big Black Guitar. Backed by The Broken Arrows (which featured his brother Chris Brodie on slide guitar and Dan Kelly
on bass), Brodie signed to EMI
who re-released his debut album. Brodie's early work blurred the genres between alternative and country music; and as such he as the first artist to play both the Tamworth Country Music Festival
and the Big Day Out
in the same year. Both the EP and debut album were produced by Maurice Frawley
at Atlantis Studios.
Brodie's second album, Empty Arms, Broken Hearts was issued in 2002 and featured vocals by You Am I
's Tim Rogers
. Featuring the singles "Take A Bullet" and "Jesus, Try And Save Me" the album scored Brodie two ARIA Award nominations for Best Male and Breakthrough Artist.
A critically acclaimed 'solo' album was released in 2005 that veered away from country into a more indie rock sound and was produced by Barry Palmer
of Hunters and Collectors.
2010 saw Brodie contribute a song to Long Gone Whistle: the Songs of Maurice Frawley, a tribute album to singer-songwriter, Maurice Frawley
after the singer-songwriter succumbed to a brief battle with cancer.
In 2011, Brodie returned with the independently released, "My Friend The Murderer". Spanning eleven tracks, the album was recorded at Headgap Studios in Melbourne, Australia by Brent "Sloth" Punshon (Adalita
) and for the first time Brodie's newly formed backing band, the Grieving Widows featuring Chris Brodie (Broken Arrows) on bass and Dave Nicholls (Ian Rilen
/Spencer P Jones) on drums.
In addition to several Australian tours; Dan has also toured the U.S. (including appearances at the South by Southwest
Festival in 2003 and 2011) and Europe.
