Heatley set up Rainbow Corporation in the 1980s which had interests in food retailing, entertainment and property which was bought by Brierley Investments.

He then went on to be one of the founders of Sky Network Television

, New Zealand's only pay TV provider and now one of the largest New Zealand companies.

Heatley has since sold his stake in Sky Network Television, and now has diversified interests throughout New Zealand, Asia and the U.S. He is also a major player in the New Zealand private equity

He is one of a few New Zealanders to own (and pilot) their own private jet and helicopter. He owns several houses in New Zealand and Hawaii.

Heatley is a competitive amateur golfer who won the 2003 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach with professional golfer Phil Tataurangi
