in 1900 to a recently arrived Italian American family. She was the youngest of nine and because of that she was allowed to take up the unusual ambition for her family of becoming an artist. She attended free classes although she was sent home from one class because there was only one girl who wanted to attend. She worked by day and studied in the evenings at the Art Students League. She won the Rome Prize
