Cisco 12000
Encyclopedia
The Cisco 12000, also known as a Gigabit Switch Router or GSR, is a series of large network routers designed and manufactured by Cisco Systems
. It is marketed primarily to large service providers, as well as for use in some enterprise networks. The routers are made with a variety of chassis sizes and types, all of which share compatible card interfaces.
Routers in this series are designed to provide IP
and MPLS
services. To maximize availability for service providers, the feature set includes redundant power supplies, standby route processors, resilient fabric, and alarm modules.
GSR line cards are available for Asynchronous Transfer Mode
, Frame Relay
, Packet over Sonet (POS)
, and Gigabit Ethernet
protocols.
The initial models GSR 12016 and GSR 12008 were named after mountains in Yosemite Valley
: El Capitan
(probably due to its impressive appearance) and Half Dome
(having half the size and capacity of the GSR 12016)

Multiprotocol Label Switching
Multiprotocol Label Switching is a mechanism in high-performance telecommunications networks that directs data from one network node to the next based on short path labels rather than long network addresses, avoiding complex lookups in a routing table. The labels identify virtual links between...

GSR line cards are available for Asynchronous Transfer Mode
Asynchronous Transfer Mode
Asynchronous Transfer Mode is a standard switching technique designed to unify telecommunication and computer networks. It uses asynchronous time-division multiplexing, and it encodes data into small, fixed-sized cells. This differs from approaches such as the Internet Protocol or Ethernet that...

Frame Relay is a standardized wide area network technology that specifies the physical and logical link layers of digital telecommunications channels using a packet switching methodology...
, Packet over Sonet (POS)
Packet over SONET/SDH
Packet over SONET/SDH, abbreviated POS, is a communications protocol for transmitting packets in the form of the Point to Point Protocol over SDH or SONET, which are both standard protocols for communicating digital information using lasers or light emitting diodes over optical fibre at high...

Gigabit Ethernet
Gigabit Ethernet is a term describing various technologies for transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of a gigabit per second , as defined by the IEEE 802.3-2008 standard. It came into use beginning in 1999, gradually supplanting Fast Ethernet in wired local networks where it performed...

Yosemite Valley
Yosemite Valley is a glacial valley in Yosemite National Park in the western Sierra Nevada mountains of California, carved out by the Merced River. The valley is about long and up to a mile deep, surrounded by high granite summits such as Half Dome and El Capitan, and densely forested with pines...

El Capitan
El Capitan is a vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park, located on the north side of Yosemite Valley, near its western end. The granite monolith extends about from base to summit along its tallest face, and is one of the world's favorite challenges for rock climbers. The formation was...

Half Dome
Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, located in northeastern Mariposa County, California, at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley — possibly Yosemite's most familiar rock formation. The granite crest rises more than above the valley floor....
