Programming

Cinémoi screens French movies for an English-speaking audience. All films are consequently subtitled, unless the original audio of the film is in English.

Films are programmed across all genres and periods, from silent films to titles recently released in cinemas. The channel also curates seasons on specific directors, actors and themes, such as François Truffaut

The channel does not carry advertising and screens its films without interruption. The channel logo does not appear on the feature films, although it is displayed during documentaries, interviews and segments between films.

Cinémoi has a production arm, which creates interviews with personalities from French and international cinema, TV, culture and the arts for broadcast on the channel. It has also broadcast shows from the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and 2010.

In 2011, Cinémoi will diversify its content to lifestyle programmes (Fashion, Wine and Life style).

History

Cinémoi soft launched on 23 February 2009 on Sky channel 839, on a free-to-air trial period for 6 hours a day, before officially launching its subscription-based model on 11 May 2009, since when it broadcasts 12 hours a day of programming from 3pm to 3am.

On 6 August 2009, the channel number was changed to 343, in the Movies section of Sky’s EPG as opposed to its previous placement in the International Section, owing to its subtitled content and all programmes accessible to an English-speaking audience.

On 1 December 2010, Cinémoi soft-launched on Virgin Media channel 445 for a 2 month period prior to encryption on 1 February 2011.

Owner

Cinémoi is an independent venture, owned by the Mint Group. Cinémoi’s creator is Oliver Bengough and the channel’s artistic director is Julien Planté, a former programmer at the Ciné Lumière at London's French Institute. On 14 December 2010, Jonathan Ross

 acquired a shareholding in Cinémoi, under the deal Ross became Cinémoi's creative director and will also present programmes on the channel.
