High school career
As a junior, Hines averaged 26 points and 8.5 rebounds per game at Evergreen, Alabama's Hillcrest High School. In his senior year, he averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. He was named the 2006 Alabama Class 4A Player of the Year and led his team to the 4A State Title; scoring 24 of his teams' 35 points in the title game. For his effort, he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He too was recognized by the Alabama Sports Writers Association as a member of the state's "Super Five" Team and was runner-up for Alabama's Mr. BasketballAlabama Mr. Basketball
