 in 1973. The election took place amidst the socialist rule of Unidad Popular, uniting parties of socialist and Marxist orientation, that was contested by opposition (from centrist to centre-right to right-wing). The opposition coalition called Confederation of Democracy actually consisted of two electoral alliances: the Federación de Oposición Democrática (including PDC, Partido de Izquierda Radical, Partido Democrático Nacional), and the Federación Nacional Democracia Radical, including Radical Democracy and the National Party. The opposition won the election, but failed to ensure a two third majority necessary for blocking president Allende's policies or to impeach him.
