The gum was unique in the fact that it was the first gum that had a liquid center in the middle that oozed out when a person began to chew it. It was similar to the later-released gum "Freshen Up."

A commercial for Chewels gum was one of the first advertisements on MTV

when the network first went on the air. The commercial was later featured on MTV's website for MTV's 25th anniversary along with the first hour of programming when the network debuted.

The jingle was: "Smack dab in the middle. Smack dab in the middle. Smack dab in the middle of the gum is the secret to Chewels' sugarless fun, a delicious center filling where others have none, smack dab in the middle of the gum."
