About 1719, he married Rachel Baillie, the daughter of George Baillie of Jerviswoode and Mellerstain. Their elder son Thomas became the 7th Earl of Haddington. The estates of Jerviswoode and Mellerstain passed to their second son George who changed his name to Baillie-Hamilton, and was the ancestor of the 10th and later Earls of Haddington.
