, the son of Martha Diane (Scronce) and Cephas Anderson Jonas. Jonas attended the public schools, Ridge Academy

He was graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
in 1902.
He taught school 1902-1906 while also studying law. Jonas was admitted to the bar in 1906 and commenced practice in Lincolnton, North Carolina
. He was also the local Postmaster
at Lincolnton 1907-1910 and later editor of a newspaper which he helped to establish in 1906.
He served as City attorney of Lincolnton 1908-1912. Jonas was elected to the North Carolina Senate
1915-1919.
He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention
