. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 28,655 people in 5,731 households.

Cateel is the home of the Aliwagwag Falls, located at barangay Aliwagwag. It is a towering waterfalls considered by hydraulic engineers as the highest in the country and regarded as one of the most beautiful falls in Mindanao. It is a series of 84 falls appearing like stairway to heaven with various heights among the steps ranging from 6 to 110 feet (33.5 m). One step is measured 72 feet (21.9 m) and another is 67 feet (20.4 m). Overall Aliwagwag Falls is 1110 feet (338.3 m) of cascading energy and 20 meters in width. All these in the midst of virgin forest. River at the foot of the falls. 13 rapids to cross.

MARYKNOLL ACADEMY OF CATEEL, INC.

Maryknoll Academy of Cateel, Inc., founded back in 1962 by Father William Galvin, offers quality education from Primary (Kinder-Garten 1 & 2), Elementary, & up to High School. Maryknoll Academy of Cateel,Inc., abbreviated as MAC,will be celebrating its golden anniversary this 2012.
River Views and Sibol are its official schoolpaper.
This school-year 2011-12, Fr. Sayman will occupy the position of Principal, and will support the school in Diocesan Catholic Schools Athletic Association (DCSAA), Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC), DACS, Provincial Athletic Meet, etc. He's also behind the big renovations such as a gymnasium, and painting the school with gold.

The School Paper Team emerged 3rd Runner-Up for High School in the recent Division Schools Press Conference held last November 12-13, 2010 at Rabat Rocamora Mati Central Elementary School II, Mati City, Davao Oriental.

'CATEEL VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL(CVHS) is one of the towns globally competive institution with a well-equipped and talent-laden students. School's also gained various awards and achievements, back to the past and of course up to the present, it continues to shine. The 4 high schools in the town are always on fire when it comes to competition matters, that could make the town, jampacked. But its undeniable that CVHS, is still unbeatable every now and then. either. sports, quiz bees, presscons and etc.. In fact CVHS, already participated in the national level of DSPC, way back on 2007, and still on the limelights and zenith of fame and continues to give quality education for all!
From the recently concluded press conference, 4 students coming from CVHS stand out to the DSPC 2011 in 6 categories and the only institution in CATEEL who gave honor to the said event.
