. Carl gets drunk at a bar and proposed to Florida, but mostly slurred his words. Florida agrees to marry Carl, and they moved to Arizona. The series left viewers and the studio audience wondering if Carl lost his battle with lung cancer. Esther Rolle
did not like this character, and appeared in the final season on only two conditions, if the Carl Dixon character was written out for good, and she had a greater say in the storylines.
