This is an aquatic
or shore plant of wet areas in mountainous areas of moderate elevation. It is found across much of North America and Eurasia. It is colonial, forming thick, floating mats on the water in wetlands and monotypic stands on shorelines and lakesides.
From a rhizome
Carex lasiocarpa bears erect stems which may exceed a meter in height and very long, very thin leaves.
