Production and conception

The title song was written and produced by Maurice Starr after seeing New Edition perform at a talent show. He signed them and had them record "Candy Girl" in a small studio in Roxbury, Massachusetts. It was written in a similar style of "ABC" by The Jackson 5. He wanted New Edition to emulate The Jackson 5, and had them perform similar dance moves and vocal harmonies with Ralph Tresvant singing lead due to his similar voice to Michael Jackson. The band members were between the ages of 13-15 when it was released.
