The Canberra International Film Festival began in 1996. All the films shown have been Canberra
premieres, and many of them have also been Australian premieres.
Convocation and held from 11 to 13 October 1996. In 1996, it showed 14 films, 12 of which were foreign.
In 1999 the coordination of the festival was taken over by the School of Creative Communication and in 2002 the festival was not held as it was handed over to a non-profit committee funded by the Australian Capital Territory
Government.
In 2006, an unrelated Melbourne based Australian International Film Festival
was launched.
