The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) promotes Canada's international relations through international education - supporting the interests of foreign nationals studying in Canada and the Canadians studying abroad. It advocates for the free movement of ideas and learners across national boundaries. The CBIE is a national, bilingual, not-for-profit, membership organization comprising members from 200 colleges, universities, school boards, educational organizations, government agencies, and businesses.

Services

The CBIE services for members and learners include educational exchanges, scholarships, training awards, internships, and technical assistance in education. The CBIE is engaged in scholarship management, civil society and public sector reform, research and information services, advocacy, training programs, and professional development for international educators.

Scholarships

CBIE manages a range of awards on behalf of the Government of Canada which are offered to Canadian students studying abroad.

CBIE manages a range of awards which are offered to foreign students studying in Canada under the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program (CCSP) and Government of Canada Awards Program (GCA).
  • The Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships (PDRF) awards are available to foreign students for Post-Doctoral research in Canada.
  • The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship available to foreign students from Central and South America.
  • The Canada–CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program available to foreign students from the countries of the CARICOM.
  • The Organization of American States (OAS) Fellowships Program Awards available to Citizens of OAS member states for studies and research in Canada.
  • The Canada-CARICOM Virtual University Scholarship Program (CCVUSP) offers selected certificate programs, delivered entirely at a distance, to learners from CARICOM countries.
  • The Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarships provides Chilean students with scholarships for access to Canadian education, resources and expertise in research.

The CBIE manages a range of awards on behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education of Kuwait, in partnership with the Cultural Division of the Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Canada.
  • The Kuwait Undergraduate Scholarship Program awards are open to citizens of Kuwait only.


The Libyan-North American Scholarship Program
  • The Libyan-North American Scholarship Program is a collaboration between the Libyan Ministry of Education and Scientific Research and the Canadian Bureau for International Education, funded by the Libyan Government. It involves approximately 2,000 Libyan students who study in Canada and the United States. The goal of the Scholarship Program is to build the capacity of Libyan citizens to address the needs of Libyan public institutions, academia and Libyan society as a whole through the pursuit of graduate and post-graduate medical studies in North America.

History

Although the Canadian Bureau for International Education was incorporated in 1966, the organization developed in the late 1940s as Friendly Relations with Overseas Students (FROS). The organization was also previously named Canadian Service for Overseas Students and Trainees (CSOST).
