and Peter Lumley in 1986 in Muelleria, based on plant material collected from Blackdown Tableland
. In his 2006 paper, New Combinations in Melaleuca for Australian Species of Callistemon (Myrtaceae), Lyn Craven, a research botanist from the Australian National Herbarium, proposed that the species should be renamed as Melaleuca pearsonii.
