History

Budrio's area was a Roman colony, whose territory was divided between veteran legionaries. The current town was however founded in the 10th-11th centuries AD. The church of San Lorenzo was already active in 1146. In the 14th century Cardinal Gil de Albornoz rebuilt it as a castle, of which the two large towers (1376) can still be seen, while of the walls only a small section remains.

Also, Budrio is the hometown of Franco Zagari, the automobile historian and photographer who authored many books on the history of Ferrari, Maserati, Osca, Stanguellini, Bugatti and Mercedes and the great Italian race car driver Tazio Nuvolari. The roots of Formula One GP driver Alessandro Zanardi (also Indy car Racing Champion in the USA) are also found in Budrio, whereas Budrio is also famous for Pizzoli SRL, Italy's leading manufacturer of French fries (Patasnella and Iodi) and other potato based food products such "gnocchi" (potato dumplings) and croquettes.
