He chaired the initial three-years of the society’s Central and Eastern European Initiative’s Committee and chaired its Ad Hoc Committee for Special Projects. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association (CRA) and Chairman of FOCUS (the Federation on Computing in the United States ). He was awarded the IEEE Richard E. Merwin Distinguished Service Award in 2002 for “For outstanding service to both the Computer Society and computing profession that continues to have enormous impact on responsible governance, high-quality publications and conferences, and the international community.”
