Lavigne began his activism in the student movement serving as British Columbia chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students

. He also served as Quebec national executive representative from 1994 to 1996; and national chairperson from 1996 to 1998. Lavigne went on to work for the British Columbia New Democrat government in a number of capacities from 1998 to 2001. From 2002-2003, Lavigne worked in a management role for the Ryerson Students' Administrative Council (now known as Ryerson Students' Union).

Among his responsibilities at the federal level, Lavigne serves as a spokesperson for Jack Layton and the party. He was a regular panelist on CTV
