He usually plays as wing - position in which he played for the Central Cheetahs in 2010.
In 2011 moved to the Bulls.
Basson has also been selected to play for the senior South African Springbok team.
Basson is also able to play in the full-back position.
In 2008 Basson was chosen to represent the Emerging South Africa team. A team which went on to win the IRB Nations Cup in Romania, 2008.

Basson signed a two year contract with the Blue Bulls Company on the September 19, 2010. He is currently one of the leading try scorers in the ABSA Currie Cup competition. He is now the sole record holder for most tries in a Currie Cup season, with 21 tries.

On Monday 15 November he and Chiliboy Ralepelle were suspended and sent home from the Northern Hemisphere tour after testing positive for a banned substance after the game against Ireland on November 6, 2010. Both players tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a "non-specified stimulant" on the prohibited substances list of the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).
