Playing career
Birkir started his career as a football player at the school team on Sandved elemtary school in the year 2000, where his teacher Sigbjørn was a great inspiration for him.Bjarnason joined Viking in summer 2005 from Figgjo. In season 2006 he scored his first goal for Viking against Hamarkameratene.
Serie A club Reggina offered Birkir a contract on January 2008. The Icelandic turned down the offer and stayed with Viking.
