Bethesda Community Development

CD Bethesda is a non-profit organization focused on providing health solutions and services for marginalized communities, especially those in rural areas. Structurally, CD Bethesda is the outreach service unit of Bethesda Hospital which is governed by YAKKUM (Yayasan Kristen untuk Kesehatan Umum - Christian Foundation for Public Health). YAKKUM is one of Indonesia's largest health service foundations.

CD Bethesda was founded in 1974 as a result of a YAKKUM planning meeting that mandated each of its hospital units to extend their comprehensive services through community development efforts in order to serve societies that are unable to access public health services. The original mission was to assist poor patients whose problems could not be solved by the hospital alone. However, illnesses in communities are often caused by poverty, ignorance and injustice. In order to help the communities solve these problems, CD Bethesda evolved into a primary and holistic health service institution focused on building healthy, prosperous and self-reliant communities. By providing solutions, knowledge and resources, CD Bethesda empowers the people to help themselves. This refinement in CD Bethesda's mission came as the result of a statement by Unicef that said the service efforts of CD Bethesda should be executed with a holistic approach and be integrated with their hospital services. CD Bethesda's first director, Dr. Paulus H. Santosa, took it a step further when said "a hospital is a service not a building, therefore it has no walls", hence creating CD Bethesda's slogan of "A Hospital without Walls".
