He was the second and youngest son of Thomas Barnes Cochrane, 11th Earl of Dundonald. the title is held by the first Baron's grandson, the fourth Baron, who succeeded his elder brother in 1990. As a descendant of the eleventh Earl of Dundonald he is also in remainder to the earldom of Dundonald and its subsidiary titles.
