A Blue Circle cement works is based in Barnstone. Cement manufacture began on this site in 1885. and it was home to one of the first rotary kilns. Barnstone specialized in manufacturing cements for the mining industry. The site is now owned by Lafarge and ceased manufacture of cement clinker in May 2006. Barnstone is now a specialized cement grinding and blending operation. It also homes people like piano teachers and childminders.
