Barland Castle was a motte and bailey-style fortification located near the tiny village of Old Radnor

. It is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century. All that remains is a ditch and a stepped bank, which may contain tumbled remains of masonry.
Little is known of the castle's history, though the Domesday Book
records the lands of Barland as having been held by a knight named Thorkell, who served Hugh L'Asne (Hugh the Ass), the lord of Radnor and other lands.
