Banjo fitting
Encyclopedia
A Banjo fitting comprises a perforated hollow bolt
and spherical union for fluid transfer. They are commonly found in automotive fuel, oil and hydraulic systems (i.e.: brakes and clutch).
The main advantage of the fitting is in high pressure applications, i.e. more than 50 bar
. The name stems from the shape of the fitting, having a large circular section connected to a thinner pipe, generally similar to the shape of a banjo
.
Also called an internally relieved bolt, see description at http://www.tpub.com/content/logistics/53/06/299/01-259-2116.htm
The bolts are usually threaded into an aluminum fitting and should only be tightened by hand. Use of high torque impact tools will break the threads of aluminum female fittings. Always check shop manuals for torque values and use a torque wrench
to ensure the ability of the banjo fitting to supply necessary pressure to the destination without leaks.
Screw
A screw, or bolt, is a type of fastener characterized by a helical ridge, known as an external thread or just thread, wrapped around a cylinder. Some screw threads are designed to mate with a complementary thread, known as an internal thread, often in the form of a nut or an object that has the...

Bar (unit)
The bar is a unit of pressure equal to 100 kilopascals, and roughly equal to the atmospheric pressure on Earth at sea level. Other units derived from the bar are the megabar , kilobar , decibar , centibar , and millibar...

Banjo
In the 1830s Sweeney became the first white man to play the banjo on stage. His version of the instrument replaced the gourd with a drum-like sound box and included four full-length strings alongside a short fifth-string. There is no proof, however, that Sweeney invented either innovation. This new...

Torque wrench
A torque wrench is a tool used to precisely apply a specific torque to a fastener such as a nut or bolt. It is usually in the form of a socket wrench with special internal mechanisms. It was invented by Conrad Bahr in 1918 while working for the New York City Water Department...

Common applications
- Brake caliper connectors
- Turbo charger oil feeds
- Power steeringPower steeringPower steering helps drivers steer vehicles by augmenting steering effort of the steering wheel.Hydraulic or electric actuators add controlled energy to the steering mechanism, so the driver needs to provide only modest effort regardless of conditions. Power steering helps considerably when a...
