) with a total area of 262.7 km² and a total population of 20,838 inhabitants. Since 2002, it is integrated in the statistical region (NUTS II) of Alentejo, and in the statistical subregion (NUTS III) of Lezíria do Tejo
, that up until 2002 belonged to the former region of Lisbon and Tagus Valley.
The municipality is limited to the north by Rio Maior
