The Athens Library began in the early 1900's as a small collection of books in the Bloczyski Hotel. In 1926, the Athens Women’s Club took over management of the library and moved the collection to the Athens Bank.

The library again moved in 1941, this time to the Community Hall. In 1947, the Athens Library joined the Marathon County Library. The Marathon County Library and Wausau Public Library merged to form the Marathon County Public Library

A county-wide building program created new quarters for the Athens Library. Completed in August 1996, the remodeled space made it possible for the library to quadruple the number of books held at the Athens Branch Library and to offer a wider range of programs to children.

Education

The Athens School District is made up of five schools. There are two parochial schools, Athens Elementary School, Athens Middle School and Athens High School. The middle and high schools share the same building. The Athens School District belongs to the Marawood Conference. Its mascot is the Fighting Bluejay.
