On August 1, 1996, he renounced from the Socialist Party of Chile, and later joined the Party for Democracy. From October 8, 1998, and until March 11, 1999, he was first vice president of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile.

In 2005, he ran for senator for the ninth circunscription of O'Higgins Region

Aníbal Pérez has held the president office of at least three different football clubs: Unión Santa Cruz Football Club, during 1983; Los Leones Football Club, also during 1983; and O'Higgins Football Club, during 1992.
