, Rafferty was the first woman Chair of the Criminal Bar Association. She became a Queen's Counsel
in 1990 and a Recorder
the following year. In 1999, she was appointed as a Deputy High Court Judge. She was appointed to the High Court of Justice
and assigned to the Queen's Bench Division in 2000, and was awarded the customary appointment as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
Among the more notable trials over which she presided were those of Paul Burrell
and teacher Sion Jenkins.
In 2011, she was appointed to the Court of Appeal of England and Wales
with effect from 5 July, and will receive the customary appointment to the Privy Council
