Anekal was also called as "Gajashella Pura", "Gajashella" means elephant rock and "Pura" means town.

, Anekal had a population of 33,160. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Anekal has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 56% of the males and 44% of females literate. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Education

  • Dr. Gopalraju instituted a college here for B.A and B.Com streams, in English and Kannada mediums. It offers a B.B.M degree also. The college is currently in its 27th year. It is the only Government college in Anekal taluk. The college was in co-ed mode (girls and boys) till 2007, when it was converted to a girls-only college by Bangalore University and the College Development Community. The Bangalore University and the Karnataka Government subsequently allowed admission for boys. However, the ruling was neglected by the College. The Prajatare [www.anekal.ibibo.com] group launched a protest in Anekal. The protest was successful and boys have eventually been admitted to the college.
