Background

The Amstelpark was opened for the Floriade gardening exhibition in 1972. The park offers the Amstel train which runs through the Rosarium, the rhododendron

 valley and the Riekermolen.

The park lost about 30 percent of bigger trees due to disease. The rhododendron valley contains about 139 species of rhododendrons, blooming between April and May.

At the Great Pond in the park is the Japanese Garden. In line the celebration of the 400-year relationship between the Netherlands and Japan in 2001, the gardens were renovated.

The Riekermill lies south of the Amstelpark. A windmill was situated here from 1636 and was active until in 1932, and was removed in 1956. The city council decided to rebuild the mill on the west side of the Amstel in 1961. The mill has become a well known image, due the sketch by Rembrant.
